Rich's signal
to Groveland was S_7-9, about 13 miles away, so I used a 'Loop' antenna
to acquire my bearings. I must say, it works
really well and was so much easier to use. I would just jump out of my
car and take a bearing, looking for the deepest null I could find while
walking around the car. I would then sight down the edge of the loop,
take a compass bearing and subtract or add 90* to what I read. |
|
|
The statistics
of taking Loop Antenna bearings were:
Bearing #
1 ... +9* off from actual.
2 ... +15* off from actual.
3 ... +4* off from actual.
4 ... 0* dead on the fox.
5 ... -5* off from actual.
6 ... +8* off from actual.I used the
VHF Sniffer MK4 as my receiver, locked in on attenuation '0' to hear
a very sharp and deep null. |
|
|
The Doppler,
of course kept me informed if the Fox was in front of me or I passed it
and it was now behind me.The
VHF Sniffer MK4, was also very useful in letting me know how close I
was getting to the Fox. I pay very little attention to it when the
attenuation levels are 0, 1 or 2 but, wake up when I see a '3' and get
ready to locate the Fox when I see '4' on the display. 5, 6 and 7
displays very quickly, usually within a couple hundred feet of each
other. |

That's about
it. See you at our next transmitter hunt. Jim
