My
new navigator, Ron, rode with me this evening and for never having done
this before did really well. Our initial bearing
was 352*, telling us to head north on Interstate-680. This couldn't be
right, after all, this is a Fremont hunt.
After discussing where to go, we decided to follow the
"T-Hunters Rules" and head
north on I-680, along the initial bearing.
We made a foolish mistake close-in, passing the
Foothill Blvd. exit and having to make a U-Turn, quite a distance up
I-580. |

Having a list of tried and true hunting equipment, made getting back
into t-hunting, after a long absence, really easy.
Hunting Equipment I used that made t-hunting fun and easy.
1) 4-Element
ARROW Yagi. For my
initial bearing.
2) MK4 Sniffer.
Used as a receiver for my Yagi, as well as my
U-R-Here radio and close-in sniffer.
3) Compass, plastic map of
the Bay Area & protractor.
4) AHHA Microfinder
Doppler.
4) Garmin
StreetPilot-2610. Computer assisted route and street level maps.
The biggest difference between my setup and other
t-hunters is the MK4 Sniffer and Garmin StreetPilot-2610.
The MK4 zero's in on the initial bearing, fast
(because of it's signal strength tone). The MK4 also helps you determine
your distance from the fox-transmitter, while your driving towards it.
When your close to the transmitter, say MK4 attenuation level-4,
consider stopping. I have never had my MK4 lower than level-4 when
arriving near a fox-transmitter. I have had it higher, around level-7
when next to the transmitter, (definitely stop when the MK4 reaches
level-6 or 7).
My next tool, the Garmin StreetPilot-2610 is my only
driving map. It plots routes, Quickest or Shortest. Most of the time I
plot small "Shortest" routes, which takes me along back roads, avoiding
roads without exits or dead-end roads. I no longer worry about not
having the proper maps for the territory. The SP-2610, with it's 128MG
compact-flash card, contains all of California and Nevada. If you need
other area's, just erase and re-load the new area from your CD-ROM,
which contains all roads in the United States, including Alaska and
Hawaii. |

Rich-KN6FW hid
his transmitter, down a ravine. The MK4 and 4-element yagi, pointed
directly at it, in the dark and a flashlight lit up the antenna. |

We
eat dinner at Fuddruckers, even with the recent scare of M-Cow-Decease.
Jeff-KD6TOJ found a bottle of Brain Drink, so we were
relieved and relaxed a little. |

Rich-KN6FW
finely showed up for dinner, around 8:30 PM. Good challenge hunt.
