EQUIPMENT I USED

* 1) Arrow 146-4-II, Four element yagi.

* 2) VK3YNG Sniffer MK4, I used it as my initial bearing receiver (attenuation #1). Additionally, I used the MK4 as my U-R-Here radio which displayed my progress towards the fox exceptionally well. I also used the MK4 as my close-in sniffer.

4) Compass, Protractor and Map. I plotted my initial bearings on a laminated (printed) TOPO map.

* 5) AHHA MicroFinder Doppler, Worked okay.

6) Standard C5900DA, Mobile tri-band radio. Any mobile radio will do, as long as you can hear the FOX and talk on the TALK-IN frequency. I use my mobile radio as a distant U-R-Here radio and switched to my Sniffer MK4 when I get really close. The MK4, attenuation level-7 seems to be the magic number to stop and walk.

* 7) Garmin StreetPilot-III. Street level mapping helped me find streets I was not familiar with, as well as the FOX.

* Equipment that allowed me to find the FOX.

Story

Using my VK3YNG Sniffer MK4 and Arrow 146-4-II, I shot a bearing of 341* to the FOX (correct bearing was 325*). The signal was pretty weak and only registered S-1 on my mobile radio but, I was still able to use my MK4 Sniffer (set to attenuation level-1).

I noticed if I set my MK4 Sniffer to the highest attenuation level possible and still hear the FOX, I could eliminate adjacent channel interference and center my beam on the signal better. Apparently the human ear can distinguish changes in low frequency tones better than high frequency tones (or am I just getting old).

Plotting a route of 341* on my Garmin StreetPilot-III, I drove off North on Hwy-880 and then Hwy-580. My Doppler pointed towards the FOX (146.565 MHz) but, was also getting a lot of adjacent channel interference from someone talking on 146.555 MHz (with a lot of power), from Oakland and San Francisco. Experience dictated I drive along my initial bearing because the FOX signal was still weak and the Doppler pointed periodically along my initial bearing.

As I drove past the FOX, indicated by my Doppler swinging left and then behind me, and my MK4 Sniffer only displayed attenuation level-2 (I was on the back side of the FOX beam). I turned around and followed my Doppler. The confusing part was my MK4 Sniffer was still at attenuation level-2 (indicating the FOX was 1-2 miles away) and my Doppler was pointing across the Bay Waters (could he be on Treasure Island?).

Following another rule. I began eliminating areas along the Bay Water, before I committed to crossing the Bay-Bridge. As I drove a short Peninsula road towards the Emeryville Marina, my MK4 Sniffer began its attenuation climb towards level-7 and my Doppler pointed straight ahead of me. Locating Dave-KG6ACD and his 5-watt transmitter was a big relief.

This was a great hunt. Thank Dave.
