Walked near the fox. |

From the Fremont start point roadway, I read an incorrect bearing of
300* to the easy fox and multiple bearings to the hard fox. Because of
the multiple readings, I decided to climb a hill and get bearings from a
near by peak. Up on top I read a bearing of 193* to the hard 1st fox and
175* to the easy 2nd fox. I think the hard fox
bearing was a reflection since the transmitter was in a flood control
channel, below ground level, facing west. I also believe the easy fox
signal was blocked by a large hill to our east.
After driving away from the Start Point mountains, my
Doppler began pointing
correctly towards both foxes. Plotting a GPS route (shortest distance)
on my StreetPilot-III
towards Hwy-237 I took back roads to Hwy-880 and ramped off at Dixon
Landing Road.
At this point my Doppler pointed South/East but, since
my initial bearing indicated South/West I took the new frontage road
south/west towards McCarthy Ranch in Milpitas.
Quickly my Doppler and
U-R-Here radio
indicated I was on the right road and within a few hundred feet of the
transmitter.
Taking my
4-element Arrow beam
and Scout-40 frequency
counter with me, I walked over a couple of hills and located the hard
1st transmitter. I don't think I could have found it, if it were not for
my close-in gear. I had to point and get my beam to within a few inches
of the transmitting antenna before I saw the thing.
Driving towards the Easy 2nd Fox was not too
difficult. When I arrived at McCarthy Ranch, my Doppler continued to
point east, away from my initial bearing. Knowing there was a Round
Table Pizza just east of Hwy-880 I made my route correction and headed
towards Round Table. |

Equipment I used.
1) 4-element beam: To obtain
my initial bearings and for close-in work.
2) AHHA
MicroFinder Doppler. Very helpful.
3)
Garmin StreetPilot-III: Street level GPS map and auto routing to
find the shortest route to the foxes.
4) Laptop Computer: TOPO
GPS mapping. Very useful, plotting my initial bearings.
5) Icom IC-R3, U-R-Here
radio. Full scale on attenuation-4 when I was near the FOXES
6) Scout-40 frequency counter,
connected to my 4-element beam and used as a close-in sniffer.
7) Mobile radio, Standard
C5900DA. Listen to the fox frequency and talk-in communications
channel.
CONCLUSION:
A good BEAM (mine is made by Arrow Antenna), the StreetPilot-III for auto
routing a short route to my destination, a laptop
computer running TOPO to plot my
bearings, the U-R-Here radio (Icom IC-R3)
to tell me I'm close enough to walk and my Scout-40 frequency counter to
sniff out the transmitter.
