Eleven teams participated in this evenings Fremont mobile hunt.
Shooting a couple initial bearings to both Fox
transmitters, I incorrectly read a bearing to the 1st Fox. I also
incorrectly chose to drive north on the freeway, which added 3.2 miles
to our total drive.
If you click on the two overall maps, you'll see we
couldn't get a direct bearing anyway. In the future, I think taking
Fremont Blvd. north until the Doppler points otherwise might be the
wisest move.
Locating the 2nd Fox was not much of a problem, other
than back-tracking a little after passing the only street into the area. |

Equipment I used. 1) 4-element beam: To obtain
my initial bearings.
2) AHHA
MicroFinder Doppler. Guide me alone.
3)
Garmin StreetPilot-III: Street level GPS mapping.
4) Laptop Computer: TOPO GPS mapping and draw bearings.
5) Icom IC-R3, U-R-Here
radio. Full scale on attenuation-4 worked great when near the FOX.
6) Mobile radio, Standard
C5900DA. Listen to the fox frequency and talk-in communications
channel.
CONCLUSION:
Doppler, U-R-Here radio and Garmin StreetPilot-III working together is a
killer combination. All I had to do was follow my Doppler on streets
shown by the StreetPilot GPS and stop when my U-R-Here radio sounded
off. Pretty easy.

The 1st Fox
transmitter. Just a standard handheld radio attached to a "No
Stopping" sign. |
|
|
|
The 2nd Fox
transmitter was hidden behind some bushes at Jeff-KD6TOJ's house.
Jeff-KD6TOJ and Rich-KN6FW hosted a free barbeque
dinner for all the hunters. |

Don't forget to
attend the Stockton Hunt this
coming Saturday. September 14, 2002 at 10:00 AM. Paul Shinn is the
FOX.
There will be a foot hunt in the park at the end and FREE food and
drink in a park setting. If you don't want to do the multiple
transmitter foot hunt, you don't have to.
This is the last hunt of the year (and maybe the last hunt for
Stockton). |
